Why the name Accelerate Church?
The definition of accelerate is “to move more quickly” or “increase in amount or extent.” That is why accelerate church exists. We will be a church that is designed to GO & GROW! Be different and make a difference.
Jesus Christ said to GO and spread the good news. That doesn’t mean GO until you have a church that you’re comfortable with in size (whatever that number is) nor does it mean to stay on the sidelines until you feel that you’re totally prepared. He wants us to GO! God has already given us the tools that we need. As we GO, he will give us more but we need to start with what we’ve got.
Adding to that, by the very nature of GOing, we will be GROWing! Too often we find churches that are comfortable with their size (whether that’s 20, 200 or 2000). Church isn’t about being a country club. If you’re not growing, you’re dying! For some reason we forget that church is for those who have yet to find it as well as for those who have found it. If you enjoy going to your church, why in the world would you not be comfortable in inviting others to come and check it out? How could you be that selfish? Too many churches today are stuck in the Peter Pan syndrome. They don’t want to grow up. They’re comfortable in whatever stage of adolescence (or infancy) that they’re in. The church should be an ever-changing organism that continues to GROW in numbers and influence: Making a positive change in every life possible!
We live in a society that is constantly moving faster and as individuals we seem to be always racing to keep up. Why is it then that we don’t put that type of emphasis on the church? Why is it that we’ve allowed the church to become antiquated and obsolete? The church should be on the cutting edge of society not trailing it. We as a church should be viewed as the leaders in the world today. Corporations should be copying our marketing and advertising strategies and governments should be studying our effectiveness on social issues.
We have a lot of work to do. Stay tuned.
